Difference between "Maki-e" and "Chinkin"

There are major decoration techniques for Japanese traditional lacquerware.

Process for "Maki-e"

1. Draw lacquer on the material with a brush.
2. Sprinkle gold and silver powder on the lacquer
3. Once dry, apply lacquer on top
4. Dry again and polish to finish

Process for "Chinkin"

1. Dig the material with a chisel
2. Lacquer is drawn on the dug part
3. Apply gold or silver leaf
4. After it dries, wipe off excess foil to finish
